Fever Baby

Conrad threw up at daycare on Monday and had a pretty high fever so I picked him up and took him home.  I gave him some Tylenol and he seemed better.  He played and was mostly a happy guy until that evening hit and his fever spiked again.  He seemed pretty miserable and was so hot.  Kris and I tried a body temp bath, but he just started to shiver.  I was worried it was an obstruction because he has been having some BM trouble lately too; so we took him in to Urgent Care, better safe than sorry right?

His fever was 101.9 and he clearly didn't feel himself, but no ear infection, no tenderness to indicate an obstruction issue... basically it was called a virus, take him home, give him ibuprofen and Tylenol to keep the fever below 104 and keep fluids in him.

All night we were up and down giving him meds and trying to sooth him.  He vomited a few more times and didn't want to eat or drink.  It was a restless night.  I stayed home with him Tuesday and his fevers stopped spiking.  He kept food down ad while didn't seem back to his old self was doing better.  Although there was this little red rash starting to show up with some pimple looking spots mixed in.

This morning he woke up bright and early to play and we took him to daycare.  He apparently slept most of the morning but otherwise was a good little guy, until Ronnie (our daycare lady) noticed one of the spots on his hand had bulged into a big blister.  He has blisters popping up on his arms, legs, hands, feet, and bum.  Back to the doctor.

Conrad has hand, foot, and mouth disease.

I guess it is pretty easy to get and contagious before you even know you have anything.  It causes a fever and vomiting which (especially in a baby) can mean so many things, then the rash and blisters.  By the time those show up to tell the doctor what is going on you are basically too late.

Conrad seems a bit more cranky than usual, but is playing and jibber jabbering as usual.  The blisters can be painful and he has a couple in his mouth.  He doesn't want to eat so much and we are keeping Tylenol in him to ease any pain, but hopefully he is on the mend.

I guess this is contagious until the blisters scab up.  What is the worst is that there is nothing we can do but wait and try to keep him comfortable.  I hope he gets better soon.
