Family Update

We are keeping very busy and with spring on its way it seems the schedule is just getting fuller each day.  This is the time of year I love though since it begins to get busy with family trips and gatherings and fun times with friends and getting outside to enjoy the nicer weather.

Kris is starting to get back to golfing more.  He was fitted for new clubs last weekend which he will be able to get soon and to no surprise that makes him want to get out all the more.  He and a friend are playing in a tournament at the end of next month in Redmond so we are going to take a long weekend and all go over to enjoy.  I am hoping Conrad and I can go for walks, relax and play, and maybe get in the pool - if it is warm enough or indoors.

I have been very busy at work.  OSU is just about to roll out a new timekeeping system to campus and I have been involved in testing and feedback for this new program.  We are working hard now on communication to our units on campus and making helpful tools and guides to work in the new system.  There is a project team who has created some of this for campus but now we want to supplement and refine those to meet the needs of the people we serve here.  It has been a little tough going because it seems like we are putting things together on the fly and still trying to fix system issues while we are two weeks away from the first phase of the launch.  Every month for the next four we will be working through a new group of employees; so each month I expect to have many calls, questions, and problems coming my way.  Oh well in the end I think this will be a good transition and finally getting this whole process electronic rather than by paper.

Conrad is 18 months now, almost 19.  He is 27 pounds at his last appointment.  He is at a really fun time now since he is so mobile and a chatter box.  More and more we understand what he is saying and it is fun to think what he might really be talking about when he is gabbing away.

We think we have been dealing with some sleep regression.  Conrad has been waking at night and multiple times at night and while he is clearly tired he wants us to rock him.  If out of exhaustion we do take him to bed with us he will flip and flop around, he will hum and sing, or kick his legs.  It is not so much that he is playing or trying not to sleep, but that he just really can't relax and settle down.  Over time with him we have tried everything anyone could suggest, we have tried letting him cry, we have tried going in laying him down leaving letting him cry for so long then go back, we have tried rocking him and getting him back in bed, we have tried not picking him up but rubbing his back, we have tried sleeping with him, and combinations of these things.  At the usual loss we keep digging in books and online and found so articles that seem to speak to exactly what he is doing, it is not night terrors (maybe one of the times), not teeth, hunger, thirst.  It has to be sleep regression.  I love this line; "Trying to force a baby to sleep is kind of like hitting your head on the wall…. It feels good when you stop" from CleverFather.com.  While there is apparently nothing we can do but wait it out as this too shall pass, it makes us feel better that maybe it is normal, not something we did or are doing, and that we aren't bad parents who are ruining our child by getting up and not letting him cry or by taking him to bed so that maybe someone can get a little sleep again.  I am not sure if my friends just didn't experience this or didn't have a name for it but I hadn't heard of this trouble and just wasn't prepared. As soon as Kris and I talked about it being this and maybe we just have to go with it and hope it passes soon, last night Conrad slept and staying asleep until  about 6:30 which is just about the right time for him to get up anyway.

Maybe we will have another one sometime soon after all.
